Licence to Operate a Restaurant on Your Campsite

Thinking of opening a restaurant or serving alcohol on your campsite? Here's everything UK campsite owners need to know about premises licensing, food safety registration, and mandatory declarations before trading.

What Are the Legal Requirements?

Premises Licence for Selling Alcohol or Hot Food

If you intend to run a restaurant, café, or bar on your campsite in the UK, you must apply for a Premises Licence under the Licensing Act 2003.

This licence is required if you plan to:

  • Sell alcohol (for consumption on or off the premises)
  • Provide late-night hot food or drink (between 11pm and 5am)
  • Host regulated entertainment (e.g. live music, films, dance)

In most cases, you will also need a Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS) who holds a valid Personal Licence.

The process involves:

  • Submitting an application to your local council
  • Displaying a blue public notice for 28 days on-site
  • Notifying the police and responsible authorities

Note: You may be required to attend a short accredited training course to obtain your Personal Licence. This is typically a one-day course and exam.

Registering a Food Business

Any campsite offering food or drink—even tea and cake—must be registered as a food business with the local authority. This is free of charge but must be done at least 28 days before trading.

Planning Permission & Local Notification

If you are changing the use of an existing building (e.g. turning a reception area into a café or restaurant), you may need planning permission from your local authority. Always check before starting work.

Additionally, if you plan to build a new structure, install an outdoor bar, or add signage, local rules apply regarding permitted development and advertising consent.

Food Hygiene & Safety Standards

After registration, your site will be subject to Environmental Health inspections. You must comply with UK food hygiene standards, including:

  • Proper food storage and refrigeration
  • Clean water and handwashing facilities
  • Allergens and labelling compliance

You may display a Food Hygiene Rating (0 to 5 stars) on your premises, awarded by your local authority after inspection.

Optional Training and Certification

While not always mandatory, it's strongly recommended that campsite owners or staff complete basic training in:

  • Food Hygiene Level 2
  • Health & Safety in Catering
  • Licensing Law Awareness (for alcohol sales)
